JiNan Glasgow sees patents differently than other patent attorneys. She served as an examiner in the US Patent and Trademark Office and saw that the patent process had not changed substantially in decades. The technology and productivity revolution that was transforming business had not taken root in the USPTO. She left the USPTO to obtain her degree in patent law, and founded Glasgow Law Firm in 1999.
She developed the first version of our PatentMatrix® software at this time, and used it to streamline the “invention capture” phase of her patent drafting process. Through the application of technology, she was able to offer lower, fixed prices and superior quality when compared to traditional methods. More importantly, she saw that her process put her clients in control of the patent process – a new feeling for them.
Subsequently, the firm developed Spore® Search software, named after the distinctive Spore® Diagram that represents the graphical output. This software is used for a variety of purposes, such as patentability searches, licensee searches, and freedom-to-operate searches. Neopatents has filed several patent applications on its technology, including the Semantic-based Statistical Search (S3) technology at the center of the Spore® Search software.
Spore, LLC was incorporated in 2001 to pursue opportunities to market the software, and was re-incorporated as Spore, Inc. in 2003. The market opportunities continued to expand as Intellectual Property became a key source of competitive advantage for many companies, supplanting the traditional differentiators of efficiency and productivity. Protecting creativity and innovation became compulsory activities for companies in all fields.
In 2005, the company saw the opportunity to become a full service patent analysis and design firm, and now offers a complete range of services from competitive analysis to patent development, with the mission to help business leaders derive the maximum business value from their patents. We introduced the concept of “patent design” – similar to architectural design of a house – where the patent claims are optimized to achieve business goals. (We call it “patenting smart™”!)
Finally, we realized that our company’s name didn’t accurately reflect what we were about. We chose the name “Neopatents” to highlight that there is a “new way to patent”, and we are the pioneers.
